WHAT ARE SABBATICALS?

A JOURNEY OF RENEWAL

Springbank invites you to rest, renew, and rediscover your center in our four-, eight-, or twelve-week sabbatical programs. Designed to nurture body, mind, and spirit, each program offers a healing and supportive environment for those in transition, seeking renewal, or desiring a deeper relationship with Earth, self, and all beings.

Alongside opportunities for solitude, you’ll find community with others on the path of spiritual awakening. Participants are also invited to share in the spiritual richness of our ongoing retreat offerings throughout their stay.
The full twelve-week sabbatical encompasses all the dimensions of Springbank’s program—spiritual, creative, and ecological—and may be tailored to your personal needs and rhythm. Our focus is on the healing, nourishment, and empowerment of women and men seeking wholeness.

Grounded in prayer, scripture, compassion, mindfulness, and care for the Earth, Springbank welcomes all as a sacred haven where every aspect of creation is honored and revered.Come and rest into the quiet, moss‑soft paths that wind through our 80 acres of live oak, pine, and magnolia, letting the stillness draw you gently into prayer. Join one or more of our carefully tended programs, each created to listen with you for what stirs in your heart and to open you, slowly and reverently, to a wider sense of God’s world.
THE HISTORY OF SPRINGBANK
Springbank’s story began over 230 years ago, when the King of England granted 5,000 acres of land to John Burgess. He established it as a rice and cotton plantation, built through the forced labor of enslaved people. Built in 1782, the main house—now known as Cypress House—passed through many owners as the South transitioned from a settled rural life to a time of political turmoil and war, culminating in the emancipation of the enslaved.
During Springbank’s plantation era, many men, women, and children were enslaved on the land. Records list those enslaved under Henry J. Smith, and a cemetery on the grounds—marked by stones, metal markers, and unmarked graves—bears witness to their presence.
Mr. Howard Hadden purchased the land as a wedding gift for his wife, Agnes. Under their care, new shrubs and trees were planted, creating a haven that soon attracted a wide variety of birds. In the 1940s, the original house was destroyed by fire, but it was quickly rebuilt to the original design. Today, the home still stands with grace at the end of the long, magnolia-lined drive leading from the front gate.
The property was originally entrusted to the Dominican Order of Catholic men, who developed the facilities and built a chapel. After a reorganization within the Order, the center was eventually closed. It later reopened under the stewardship of a small group of Dominican men and women. Among the pioneers who returned were Sr. Elizabeth Condon, an Adrian Dominican, and Fr. John Egan, OP. With the arrival of Dominican Sisters Ursula Ording and Trina McCormick, the retreat center entered a new chapter of life.
A sabbatical program soon took shape, weaving together ecological education, healing practices, and indigenous wisdom to offer religious from around the world a time of renewal and rest. The arts—painting, pottery, basket making, music, and dance—were introduced as forms of “soul work,” integrating creativity and contemplation, right and left brain. That same year, the property was deeded in trust to an Ecumenical Board of Directors, with the stipulation that it be used exclusively for religious purposes. In 1988, Sr. Karla Barker, OSF, from Oldenburg, Indiana, joined Sisters Ursula and Trina in the ministry.
The “Springbank Christian Center – Dominican Retreat House” then became known as Springbank Retreat Center for EcoSpirituality & the Arts. Over the years, Sr. Trina, together with staff and volunteers, blazed trails through the wooded acreage, established a Native American prayer lodge and medicine wheel with guidance from Buck Ghost Horse—a Lakota teacher from the Creation Spirituality program at Holy Names University—and created a seven-circuit labyrinth nestled beneath the arms of two live oak trees.
From 1989 to the present, programs expanded and the infrastructure matured. The Hermitage, Magnolia, and Palm Cottages were purchased for staff and guest accommodations. New facilities—including the Art Building, St. Kateri Gazebo Chapel, Maintenance Building, and Live Oak Duplex—were constructed. Cedar House, the sabbatical residence, was later enlarged to include a spacious lounge, kitchen, and dining area with panoramic views of the live oaks.
Over the years, Springbank has grown into a true sanctuary—a place of rest for the body, renewal for the spirit, and refreshment for the mind. The sacred vision that shaped Springbank emerged from the blending of three distinct yet harmonious gifts: Sister Ursula’s love for the earth, Sister Trina’s deep connection with native wisdom and the arts, and Sister Karla’s Franciscan devotion to simplicity and nature.
For fifty-five years, the retreat has been blessed with the continuous presence and service of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, including Sister Elizabeth Condon, OP, Sister Ursula Ording, OP, and Sister Trina McCormick, OP. When Sister Trina stepped down as Executive Director in September 2022, the Board of Directors honored her as the “Founding Director of Springbank Retreat.” She continues to grace the community with her presence, offering her gifts and sharing her wisdomToday, Springbank carries forward its mission under the leadership of Sister Anita Braganza, CJ, together with a devoted staff representing various religious communities, a dedicated Board of Directors, and the generous support of benefactors and volunteers.

Grandmother provides food, shade and comfort to a multitude of creatures. | ![]() From the ancient Egyptians to Stonehenge to Big Horn Country, WY, medicine wheels have been used by indigenous people to contemplate the nature of life. To Native Americans, the wheel represents the ‘sacred hoop’ or circle of all life. Study of the Wheel can provide answers to the nature of life and relationships to all of Creation. |
![]() To the Celts, the tree was a source of basic sustenance – a bearer of food, a provider of shelter and fuel for cooking and warmth. Without trees, life would have been extraordinarily difficult. In Celtic creation stories, trees were the ancestors of humankind, elder beings of wisdom. Sue Monk Kidd refers to this ‘Circle of Trees’ in her book Dance of the Dissident Daughter. |
